Celebrating the Black History of Everglades City
June 15 | 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm
In observation of the Juneteenth National Holiday (the following Monday), Museum Manager Thomas Lockyear will explore the significant though often overlooked contributions made to the region’s history by African American residents of the greater Everglades City area. Subjects will include early settler Augustus Swycover, midwife Mother Perry, Barron Collier’s multi-cultural workforce, why the local African American community moved from Dupont to Copeland, and much more.
