Did you know that county founder Barron Collier envisioned Everglades City as a filming location for major motion pictures and even had a soundstage built there? As a companion lecture to CMGC’s current exhibit featuring Florida movie posters, Museum of the Everglades Manager Thomas Lockyear will explore and celebrate the handful of Hollywood films made in and around the original county seat. His talk will include the 1957 classic “Wind Across the Everglades” (the first major movie with an environmental theme), the Joe Pesci/Danny Glover comedy “Gone Fishin’,” David Caradine’s moonshiner melodrama “Thunder and Lightning,” and many more. Mr. Lockyear will also share behind the scenes stories and photos collected from local residents who participated in the films, making this program a must for fans of cinematic history and local lore alike.
