The Allure of Immortality: An American Cult, a Florida Swamp, and a Renegade Prophet
April 12 @ 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm
FGCU Associate Professor Lyn Millner will be discussing her book about the Koreshan utopian commune founded in Estero in the late 19th century. Named as one of the five best books about cults by the Wall Street Journal, The Allure of Immortality details the story of Cyrus Teed and his followers who settled in swampy, mosquito-infested Southwest Florida to build their “New Jerusalem.” They acquired over six thousand acres of land and built their community around the ideas of communal property and shared labor. The Koreshans viewed Teed as a savior who would lead them to immortality through reincarnation, as well as believing we live inside a hollow earth that contains the entire universe.
