In celebration of Black History Month, Collier Museum at Government Center presents Jimmy Garvin.  Born to a migrant farm worker and a timber logger of humble means in Immokalee, Florida, Garvin began his mythical journey playing baseball and beating drums for the Collier County, Florida public school system. At the early age of 16, Garvin was Collier County's first African American percussionist to be honored with the state of Florida’s prestigious John Phillip Sousa award for band excellence.

Jessica Osceola, Seminole Tribe of Florida, will discuss the figure in clay from the exhibit We Never Left: Artists of Southeast Indian Tribes and how it relates to identity and motherhood. The figure is stripped down to show vulnerability rather than cloak the emotions with clothing. Throughout the figure are many symbols that hint at culture, identity, status, and roles. E. George Rogers painted a painting every day and never went to bed with an unresolved quarrel. The Mental Health Association and the Collier County Museums have partnered to honor Rogers, one of the founders of each organization. In 1952 Rogers “retired” to Naples following a successful business career. He raised a family and dedicated himself to art and community service.
